Our investments are premised on 3 critical attributes: Leadership, Partnership and Mentorship
Science and Technology are the drivers that generate ideas and products necessary for economic growth and maximising all human endeavour for accelerated and sustained socio-economic progress and preparedness. The resounding theme throughout South Africa and indeed the world is that modern societies need people with scientific, technological, engineering and maths qualifications in order to grow economies.
The Community Chest / Thales SA Science Quest in collaboration with the Cape Town Science Centre clearly emphasizes the willingness for these organisations and the country to invest in the STEM future of South Africa.
On Tuesday 17 October 2017, Community Chest and Thales SA hosted the Thales/Community Chest Science Quest 2017 for 80 Grade 9 learners from six schools on the Cape Flats, namely: Forest Heights High School, Malibu High, Kleinvlei High, Sizimisele High, Joe Slovo High and Khanyolwethu High School. The learners were treated to an afternoon of fun and exciting Maths and Science activities as they competed against each other for the Grand Prize. The activities gave the learners an opportunity to problem-solve, innovate and apply logic, all attributes needed to become successful in STEM. The event is in line with Thales SA’s aim to promote the understanding and appreciation of STEM in South African schools.
Community Chest CEO Lorenzo Davids had this to say about the event, “One of the highlights of my year is always the Annual Science Quest we do in partnership with the Cape Town Science Centre.
Building the STEM capabilities of our students is a crucial priority for us as funders. This annual investment of R1,7 million, sponsored by Thales SA, allows Community Chest to invest meaningfully in the futures of these six schools on the Cape Flats. Our investments are premised on 3 critical attributes: Leadership, Partnership and Mentorship. We look for great leaders - individuals or organisations - as partners who will in turn will mentor others.
These schools all have great leaders - students and staff with whom we are honored to partner and who over this 5 year period are annually mentoring others to increasing levels of success”.
A strategic way to meet the challenging needs of our economy is to nurture the STEM skills of our school leavers. Community Chest and Thales SA are committed to the growth of the Annual Science Quest and to the growth of South Africa which will be driven by STEM subjects.
