Celebrate Universal Children’s Day with a day of fun in the city

Categories: ALL THE NEWS , Social & Community
To commemorate Universal Children’s Day, EMBRACE, together with Cape Town organisations will host annual "Kids @ The Centre" event on 18 November 2017

With this year’s theme of “My city loves me” EMBRACE continues their mission to make all children feel included and special. By giving back to the children of the city they hope families from across Cape Town will come together to interact, make new friends and enjoy a fun day in a beautiful setting.

To commemorate Universal Children’s Day, EMBRACE, together with numerous organisations across Cape Town, will once again be hosting their annual Kids @ The Centre event on Saturday 18 November. Transforming the Company’s Garden in Cape Town into a wonderland filled with performers and fun activities, there will be something for all children and their families to enjoy with all activities free of charge.

“Kids @ The Centre is such an important event for us,” says Julie Mentor, Project Manager at EMBRACE. “We want to show all children that their city, and its people, really do care about them and want to celebrate them. Last year’s event was a big success and this year we are going bigger and better! With performances from Action Arte, the Red Zebra Foundation and the Jungle Theatre, to name just a few, we know everyone will have a fun and special day.”

Since its inception in 2013, EMBRACE has worked hard to connect parents and caregivers from across the city through supportive networks and relationship-building opportunities. With particular focus on mothers, they hosted the Mother’s Day Connect event earlier this year which saw fellow mothers empower and support each other across the country. By sparking this network of supportive mothers, their mission is to grow a national movement for motherhood.

An exciting addition to this year’s event is RX Radio, the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Radio Station. “We are proud and excited to partner with EMBRACE and other organisations at the Kids@ the Centre event,” says Dr Gabriel Urgoiti, Manager for RX Radio. “As the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Radio Station, by children and for children, we are looking forward to covering the event and to interview other children and families as well as organizations working with and for children. We want to hear children’s voices and find out from them what they think about the city of Cape Town, if it is a child friendly city and what can be done to make it better and friendlier.”

With EMBRACE’s aim to achieve solidarity rather than charity, they are pleased to be working closely with the HCI Foundation who have agreed to sponsor a number of Golden Arrow busses for children and caregivers to attend this event from Khayelitsha, Philippi and Heideveld.

“We are extremely grateful to be partnering with so many wonderful organisations this year. We have the Western Cape Department of Health, The Clothing Bank, Nal’ibali and Iziko Museums on board together with many, many more. An event like this is only possible when everyone in the city comes together and we are grateful for each and every one of our partners,” says Mentor. (see full list of partners below)

From face-painting to marimbas, gumboot dancing to reading corners, acrobats and much more, there is something for everyone to enjoy! Visitors are also encouraged to please bring their own picnic lunches to enjoy at the event. For more information visit the Embrace website, www.embrace.org.za, and Facebook page, @CapeTownEmbrace
