Image: Super-mum rhino Thandi gives birth to second calf since poaching Kariega Game Reserve’s miracle rhino Thandi, who courageously survived a brutal poaching in 2012, gave birth to a calf on Tuesday 24 January.

The mother and calf were located using a drone as they were safely hidden in thick bush. They were found on Thursday 26 January, a few anxious days after Thandi was reported missing. The birth of Thandi’s first calf, Thembi (meaning Hope), on 13 January 2015 made headlines around the world. She brought much needed hope to rhino conservationists embroiled in a seemingly losing battle against rhino poaching.   Read More...

Recently a large group of people gathered at Newscafe at King Shaka Airport for a unique rhino unveiling event.

There were there to support two local sports celebrities, Pat Lambie and Shaun Pollock, as they pledged their commitment to the fight against rhino poaching. It’s all about investing in conservation through education.

The rhino is on the IUCN red list and critically endangered. Rhino poaching is an immediate and growing global concern.  Rhino poachers killed at least 448 rhinos for their horns in 2011 alone. While this statistic is shocking and remains a serious cause for concern, the losses are far greater when the numbers of orphaned and injured rhino calves that have not been successfully rehabilitated back into the wild are added to the equation.    Read More...
