Through a community public private partnership between City of Johannesburg (CoJ), Qhubeka, Volkswagen South Africa and local schools and community policing forums (CPF) in Alexandra informal settlement, an entire community is beginning to experience how bicycles change lives. Today’s distribution ceremony sees 260 bicycles being distributed to schoolchildren from Realogile High School and members of the Alexandra CPF, while a further 40 bicycles will be distributed to Sandton Patrollers at the Johannesburg SMT bridge launch on 19 June (a total of 300 bicycles).   Read More...

Learners, parents, teachers and excited members of the local community welcomed Rotarians and members of the Lewis Group to the official re-opening of the Forever Educare Centre in Philippi.The centre, which cares for and educates 64 young learners, was in desperate need of renovations: the existing buildings were not structurally sound enough to house and educate the pupils. The partnership between Shoprite and Sweet Home Daycare Centre in Xigalo village, Malumelele followed the call made by President Cyril Ramaphosa in his maiden State of the Nation Address to end poverty by educating poor children in early childhood. Shoprite has and will in the coming months take hands with women heading up early childhood development (ECD) centres in a multi-pronged initiative that includes training for teachers and managers, structural upgrades and access to nutritional meals.

On 31 May 350 more schoolchildren in Orlando, Soweto, are receiving Qhubeka Bicycles as part of the ongoing bicycle distribution programme in the region. This community public private partnership between City of Johannesburg, Qhubeka and various corporate and individual donors and fundraisers shows how partnerships can maximise impact. The children are from Selelekela Secondary School, Orlando High School, Lofentse Girls High School and Bona Comprehensive School.

Image: Literacy NGO gives out 100,000th book READ to RISE celebrated handing out their 100,000th OAKY book at Cascade Primary School in Mitchells Plain.

The organisation visited the school to conduct their programmes to inspire the Grade 2 and 3 learners to read. As part of the programme, each of the 344 learners received a brand new OAKY book to take home. Image: 100 new bicycles to improve safety and create jobs in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) prepares to host 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships, the official Hosting City is distributing 50 Bicycles

This will be matched by a further 50 from Volkswagen South Africa. The bicycles are being distributed at a ceremony in front of the Port Elizabeth Town Hall, hosted by Mayor Athol Trollip. The bicycles funded by NMBM are for 50 new city ambassadors who will act as “peace officers”. The additional 50 bicycles from Volkswagen SA will be distributed to 30 beach officers and 20 tourism ambassadors. The aim of this public private partnership is to empower the community to support and protect tourists, visitors and cyclists through bicycle patrols, and in the process to create jobs and alleviate poverty.   Read More...
