Multi-disciplinary Family Centre

Our therapeutic work at the Centre focuses on children, adolescents, young adults, their families and schools to promote mental, emotional and physical well-being.

Our multi-disciplinary team of qualified clinical, counselling and educational psychologists, counsellors and occupational and speech therapists bring different skill sets to the team in order to help our clients

Social and Emotional Learning Centre

At the Centre we recognise the many challenges faced by children, youth and adults today, particularly in the more economically challenged areas in our community.  We have therefore developed a social and emotional learning model that is taught to adults, community leaders, school leaders, educators and children

About our work

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process through which children and adults learn how to manage how they feel, think and behave so that they can make the right choices when faced with everyday life challenges. These life skills are achieved through learning and practicing specific social and emotional competencies.  They are: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, Goal-Directed Behaviour, Personal Responsibility, Decision Making and Optimistic Thinking.

Over the past five years we have worked on numerous school and community projects to assess the effectiveness of competency-based Social and Emotional Learning at all levels. Our research shows a strong need for adult education and awareness into the importance of social and emotional development for children and how this affects classroom behaviour and academic achievement. Our model includes a professional development component in the form of talks, workshops and practical toolkits for educators and parents.

At learner level, our model includes a 8-week Social Skills Programme to teach children these skills.  We sustain change and growth through regular follow up sessions and an open door policy.

This model emphasises the importance of building relationships through opening up channels of communication. By transforming relationships, interpersonal dynamics improve, that ultimately creates stability in classrooms which enhances learning.
