The Green Building Council SA is committed to Changing the Way the World is Built – but this is not restricted to green building and construction. While we recognise the built environment’s contribution to climate change,  we realise that through strategic partnerships, we are able to tackle sustainability on a much broader scale. While our core business remains the greening of the commercial property sector, we are committed to engaging in sustainability on a social and environmental level.

Our Initiatives:

1.       Green Home

The Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) is leading a project– called ‘My Green Home’- to show the positive impact one family can have by living a more energy efficient and environmentally conscious lifestyle. This will be the journey of a real family who change their home to help change the world. Visit the My Green Home Website & Social media

2.       Cato Manor Green Street

South Africa’s first ‘Green Street’ upgrade in a low-income area was completed ahead of the COP17 international climate change talks in late 2011. Thirty low-cost houses in a small cul-de-sac road in the historic township of Cato Manor in Durban benefited from a green upgrade, called a retrofit. This project was led by the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA), in association with the World Green Building Council, and was primarily funded by the British High Commission.

3.       Greenpop – Platbos Reforestation Project

The Green Building Council SA has made a public commitment to plant 1000 trees on behalf of its members during the course of 2013 at Greenpop’s Reforest Fests and are planting another 1000 trees for 2014. Greenpop is a social enterprise that plants and maintains trees; and spreads environmental education in under-greened communities and reforestation projects in Southern Africa.
