1-About

Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) champions the restoration and preservation of Earth’s natural environment, while sustainably ensuring equitable food systems that promote food sovereignty for all. We envision a world in which nutritious food is abundant, ecosystems flourish, and biodiversity thrives.

This vision is underpinned by our steadfast commitment to fostering community collaboration, resilience, and socio-ecological harmony across Africa.

We lead by example, inspiring stakeholders to join our journey towards a more sustainable and equitable future.

With over 30 years of experience, we're adept at fostering genuine, lasting sustainability, addressing immediate needs while laying foundations for thriving communities in harmony with nature. Guided by our vision and mission, we're committed to creating a world where people and nature coexist harmoniously.

Trees for Africa

Africa, with its rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystems, is home to some of the most remarkable trees on the planet. These trees are vital for animal habitats and biodiversity and provide essential resources for local communities. Planting trees in Africa offers multifaceted benefits, extending beyond local communities to combat climate change and enhance ecosystems. When it comes to planting trees within any development context, FTFA  has been doing it since 1990. Our methodologies focus on sustainability and tree survival and have impacted many beneficiaries, from vulnerable communities and homes to farmers and schools.

Food for Africa

Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs for a productive and healthy life. At FTFA, we take a broad view of food security. Our approach includes income and non-income-producing agriculture, small and large-scale projects, and additional elements of the water-energy-food security nexus. We practise bio-intensive agriculture (in its many forms), including agroecology, permaculture, conservation and regenerative agriculture, and natural farming.

Food for Africa is not just about nourishment; it is a catalyst for food equality and celebrating tradition and resilience.

EduPlant & Education

The EduPlant School Gardening and Nutrition Programme, is a cornerstone of community development, focusing on schools, learners, and their surroundings. Established in 1994, it has become Southern Africa's largest and most impactful initiative of its kind. Combining permaculture principles with holistic education, EduPlant fosters sustainable practices, environmental ethics, and robust community networks while nurturing the next generation of farmers.

EduPlant is one outstanding example of FTFA’s work in South African education. Our team has strong curriculum development skills, leading to multiple courses being endorsed by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF). FTFA is an AgriSeta Registered training provider fully accredited for Mixed Farming Systems.

Carbon & Climate

Carbon offsetting and credit generation have become increasingly imperative as individuals and companies strive to reduce their environmental impact and contribute to the fight against climate change. FTFA is the founder of South Africa’s very first carbon footprint calculator and carbon credit enterprise – the Inclusive Carbon Standard (ICS) – one of the many results of our ongoing innovation in the industry.

Additionally, the African Climate Reality Project (ACRP) is the African chapter of the US-based Climate Reality Project, hosted by FTFA. It was established to support African Climate Reality Leaders in their efforts to combat climate change in Africa, a continent disproportionately affected by this global crisis.
