Established in 2002, Thembalethu Development empowers Southern African communities through sustainable solutions.
We collaborate with stakeholders to tackle multifaceted challenges in disadvantaged areas, focusing on agriculture, education, health, micro-enterprise development, water & sanitation, environment and waste management and responsible mining practices. Our interventions, from increasing agricultural productivity to building schools and clinics, create lasting change, fostering food security, economic opportunity, improved health, and community ownership for a brighter future.

- Initiate, conceptualise, design, implement, facilitate and coordinate development programmes

Education Support
Thembalethu Development's Educational Support Programme encompasses a diverse
range of activities aimed at enhancing learning outcomes in schools and Early Childhood
Development (ECD) centres. These initiatives are designed to address various challenges
faced by learners and educators, fostering a conducive environment for educational
success.
Agriculture and Food Security
Thembalethu Development's Agriculture and Food Security Programme empowers
communities by improving food security and livelihoods. Through training and support for
agricultural practices, we aim to enhance food security, nutrition and boost income,
fostering the development of local communities in both rural and urban areas.
Community-Based health Care & Support
Thembalethu Development addresses health vulnerabilities in communities, through
community-based health care and support programmes. These initiatives focus on
addressing social, environmental, and individual factors affecting health outcomes.
Environment & Waste Management
Thembalethu Development’s Environment and Waste Management Programme prioritise
environmental care through various initiatives, starting with the collection, disposal, and
recycling of waste as the initial phase. Collaborating with local organizations and informal
waste collectors, the programme focuses on assisting local communities in waste
management and recycling for income generation. Additionally, the organization provides
training on other innovative environmental solutions such as composting, bio-gas
generation, melting aluminum cans, and more.
Skills Development & Training Programme
Thembalethu Development provides skills development to bridge the gap between skilled
and unskilled community members, ensuring individuals can secure better opportunities
long after completing the programme. This programme offers accredited training and
support for entrepreneurship and skills development.
Social Infrastructure Porgramme
Despite increased investment in social infrastructure, many communities, particularly
those in rural and urban informal settlements still face significant deficiencies.
Thembalethu Development's approach is to ensure that the local infrastructure remain in
good condition and usable by community members. Through its programme, the
organisation mobilise resources to assist in maintaining the local existing infrastructure
and where possible develop new infrastructures.
Water & Sanitation Programme
Thembalethu Development's Water and Sanitation Programme addresses water scarcity
and sanitation challenges in rural and peri-urban areas. By repairing existing
infrastructure and creating new water sources, we promote reliable water supply to
communities. Our programme also focus on providing awereness on water conservation
and hygiene which promote water conservation and healthy living in communities
Micro Enterprise Development Programme
Thembalethu Development's Micro Enterprise Development model equips participants
with skills and experience by placing them in relevant businesses or supporting their own
ventures. Participants gain practical knowledge, acquire essential tools, and manage their
income. This model fosters skill development, entrepreneurship, and income generation,
empowering participants for economic success.
Mining & Energy Sector Programme
Thembalethu Development's programme in Mining and Energy sector facilitates
communication and relationship-building with communities, local political structures, and
stakeholders. It conducts research on prevailing socio-economic issues in host
communities and monitors and evaluates social and labour plan projects to ensure
Mining Charter obligations are met. The programme also provides livelihood
opportunities and support services for impacted communities and ex-mineworkers, as
well as community-based health services focusing on prevention, treatment, and care in
the mining community
