FOOD JUSTICE MUST BE REALISED FOR PEOPLE TO BE TRULY FREE.

Nelson Mandela said that “Freedom is meaningless if people cannot put food in their stomachs, if they can have no shelter, if illiteracy and disease continue to dog them.” Because of gross inequality, far too many South Africans live on the periphery of the economic and social mainstream, and struggle to access safe, affordable and nutritious food.

Household Food Security Programme launches on World Food Day

 

FoodForward SA’s commemoration of World Food Day highlighted the UN’s food security theme for 2021, Our Actions are our Future. Several of our donors showed their support for this global call to action by packing nutritious food parcels for our newly-launched Household Food Security Programme.

The July civil unrest left countless communities, already impacted by the protracted Covid-19 pandemic, even more vulnerable. Philip Morris International responded by sponsoring FoodForward SA with a new 8-ton truck to service the rising numbers of vulnerable communities across Gauteng.

GE Foundation Supports Food Security Efforts in Gauteng

 

On World Food Day the GE Foundation announced a donation of US$100,000 to FoodForward SA to provide food security to vulnerable communities in Alexandra and Soweto. Since 2020 GE’s Disaster and Humanitarian Relief program included a focus on COVID-19 relief efforts, response to major global disasters and humanitarian crises to reduce suffering and hasten recovery.
