The Sustainable Schools Programme growing in impact
The year kicked off with a bang, and our team has been going full steam hosting teacher workshops, day programmes, overnight camps, and getting training! The expansion of the Sustainable Schools programme across the country has been a welcomed highlight this year and is now implemented in schools in Gauteng, Limpopo, and KwaZulu- Natal!
The online hub serves as a teaching, learning, networking, and management tool. Teachers and partners can engage online in this space, further strengthening the Community of Practice while accessing quality curriculum-aligned resources to integrate Education for Sustainable Development into their day-to-day teaching.
More details here of what they were up to this year here.
Our future leaders are in your local schools right now!
The Conservation Leaders Project continues to play a major role in raising a generation of leaders that bring change within our local schools and communities. Whether learners are attending a City Nature Challenge session with the Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area and collecting vital fauna and flora data or getting their hands dirty and learning the impacts of waste on our local beach areas with the SOS Shark Education Centre, the project continues to boast its integrated, hands-on and holistic approach in equipping, guiding and mentoring our future leaders.
What’s new with our River Ambassadors?
Our Biodiversity Heroes, the River Ambassadors, recently joined The Princess Vlei Forum and Botanical Society Kirstenbosch Branch for alien hacking. The invasive Port Jackson has been threatening the endangered vegetation type at the Cape Flats Dunes Strandveld, so our team decided to come to the rescue by eradicating Port Jackson in the Greater Princess Vlei Conservation Area.
Our River Ambassadors are currently gaining the skills and experience required to manage and rehabilitate our City's degraded urban river systems which will eventually draw communities into a healthier, greener, and open space!
Well done team!
Meet Zoarvlei’s Three Amigos
Zoarvlei is known for its relatively small reserve size and hosts a vibrant and healthy bird community.
The reserve regularly sees large populations of egrets but one particular trio of egrets has been seen frequenting the reserve quite charismatically.
The Muizenberg East Team to the Rescue!
A search and rescue event was held on 9 May at a plot that is planned for development in Capricorn Park.
The Muizenberg East team along with two volunteers and a student went out after sunset to capture and relocate several species found on the site.
Nature Connect Board Member Tour
Nature Connect has the unique pleasure of managing several invaluable pockets of nature within the City of Cape Town, with equally unique funding models.
The Nature Connect Board of Trustees undertook to visit these sites during the second week of May, where they were reminded of the special work being done by their excellent team of Area Conservation managers.
KRCA Sight Night Magic
The Sight Night at Kenilworth Racecourse Conservation Area, which took place earlier this year, was a spectacle showcasing nature in its most peaceful and stunning form.
Wandering around pockets of nature by the light of the moon is a rare experience and privilege. At Nature Connect we believe that experiences such as these, draw people into a richer understanding of the living world of which they form part.
