Local communities in the North West province have directly benefitted from an increase in tourism bookings to Sun City, with over R400 000 in support from the resort during the first quarter of 2022.

The list of recipients includes non-profit organisations, students, schools, orphanages, hospitals, clinics and care centres.

Linen valued at R127 000 from the luxurious The Palace of the Lost City and other Sun City hotels has been donated to health care organisations including Hospice Rustenburg, Lehurutshe/Zeerust Hospital, Are Aganeng Centre, Phalane Clinic and Baikemedi Home Based Care.

Child-headed and disadvantaged families in local communities have received food parcels and firewood.

Nearly R42 000 has been invested in educational support for post-graduate students to attend various courses: “this is in line with education being one of Sun International’s focus areas for sustainable economic development”, says Brett Hoppé, General Manager of Sun City.

140 beneficiaries from 28 local community schools now have school shoes, stationery and uniforms. R243 000 was set aside for the Nkukise, Monakato, Boshoek, Rasimone, Mafenya, Chaneng, Bonwakgokgo, Madima, Khayalethu, Bothibelo, Mphuphuthe, Bakubung and Bakgofa primary schools and Itumeleng, Matlhare  Mokautu, Bafokeng, Molotlegi, Charora, JM Ntsime, Sedibelo, Manamakgotha, Tswaidi, Herman Thebe secondary schools, as well as technical and special needs schools in the province.

“Sun City is sponsoring six students from local communities such as Ledig, Mohobieskraal, Mogwase and Lerome, who are attending an Economic Transformation of Black Citrus Growers Programme/learnership NQF Level 4.  The Resort provides the students with transport and lunch for the duration of the year-long programme, which will assist them in acquiring the theoretical and practical knowledge needed to gain employment in the citrus industry,” said Hoppé.

Sun City is also sponsoring lunch and transport for another 37 students from Phatsima community, who are attending a project management, office practice, NPO governance and business management course NQF level 4.

“Sun City hopes to empower the future generation of leaders through the upliftment of education with these donations.”
