The outbreak of Covid-19 has definitely caused some of the most challenging and uncertain times in our history. The lockdown has affected access to food for many of the most vulnerable people in our country.

During this time, Rise Against Hunger Africa has distributed over 1.2 million meals to various organisations. As our normal distribution channels have been interrupted, i.e. distributing meals to ECD Centres, we have engaged with over 40 NGOs, relief agencies,Government departments and corporate partners to assist where we can. This has allowed us to reach some of the most vulnerable communities in need during this time.

The collaboration between NGOs during this period has been phenomenal. It has also been heart-warming to see the number of individuals who want to assist and get involved. We will continue to distribute meals through our partners during this period..

Disaster Relief in KZN

Since the Covid-19 Pandemic began, Rise Against Hunger KZN has distributed meals to some of the following partners; 'SOS Children's Village', 'City Hope Disaster Relief', and 'Phumula Children's Village'.  98 496 meals have been distributed to beneficiaries in this area, as well as support given towards communities in informal settlements in some of these areas: Molweni, Embo, Hillcrest, UGU District, Ethekweni and PMB. Through one of our corporate partners we were able to deliver over 47 000 meals in the Durban region.

Finally, meals were taken to the Bizana area where we normally support 161 ECDs and will impact over 5 200 lives.

RAH starts packing

With the notice of the extended lockdown, Rise Against Hunger took a decision to setup in-house production lines at two of our branches in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Listed as an essential service provider during the period, we have employed a team to assist us continue packing, along with our dedicated staff members. This will ensure we can keep up with the demand for nutritious meals until we can engage with our dedicated volunteers once again.

Ultimately however, funding is still our biggest challenge. With most of our events being cancelled for the next 2 to 3 months we need to continue driving for funding to ensure we have sufficient meals when we can once again deliver to and replenish stocks at the Early Childhood Development Centres we support.
